Many believe that regular dental cleanings aren’t necessary if you take good enough care of your teeth. While your risk for tooth decay is much lower when you have excellent oral hygiene, dental cleanings should still be included in your routine. Regular visits don’t just better your odds of fending off tooth decay and gum disease, they also allow your dentist to catch health conditions early on. By visiting regularly, we can see trends and symptoms that may otherwise be difficult to detect. Routine visits are great insurance against all kinds of health conditions, including oral cancer.
When you arrive for your bi-annual appointment, we will perform a dental exam that includes diagnostic testing. We may use X-rays, intraoral cameras, or a combination of both to detect cavities and other health conditions. We may look for symptoms of oral cancer, including:
Patients whose results come back with concerns or complications will be directed towards the proper treatment, such as cavity fillings. Otherwise, once we prove you’re in the clear, we’ll perform a basic dental cleaning. Over the next 30 minutes, we will scrape away tartar and floss between teeth to get rid of harmful plaque buildup. Tartar allows bacteria to inflame the gums and damage the enamel, so it’s imperative that we get rid of it at regular intervals.
Finally, we may offer fluoride treatments and dental sealants as added layers of protection against cavities. Topical fluoride helps strengthen the enamel, so it better defends the tooth against decay. Sealants, usually a thin layer of composite resin on molars and bicuspids, can prevent food particles from settling into the grooves of the teeth. While sealants are great for children who have difficulty brushing thoroughly, they can also be useful for adults with an increased risk of tooth decay, and people with disabilities for whom brushing and flossing is more difficult.
