Jaw pain is incredibly disruptive. You notice it when you eat, speak, swallow, and sleep. When are you not experiencing symptoms? If you’re suffering from a disorder of the TMJ, you need treatment that can relieve your pain and determine the root cause. Our team of general dentists and dental professionals will use our experience in dentistry, modern imaging technology, and our knowledge of your health history to make accurate diagnoses and treatment decisions. You can trust in us to thoroughly assess your health and complaints from every angle, so the treatment plan we design doesn’t fall short of your needs.
When you feel pain in the jaw just underneath the ear, you may be experiencing TMJ pain. This joint, also called the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) can get tired, strained, and out of sync with the rest of your jaw. As a result, you may experience symptoms like:
These symptoms together represent a temporomandibular disorder (TMD). Many people who are experiencing these symptoms are suffering from a related problem, such as intense stress or anxiety. Depending on the cause, we may recommend at-home treatment, lifestyle changes, or surgery.
For most people, disorders of the TMJ are curable with only a few habit changes. We may recommend TMJ exercises to stretch the joint, massage the muscles, and improve mobility in the jaw. This will often help to reduce inflammation and relieve pain. Over-the-counter pain relievers can make these exercises more manageable.
Many people who suffer from TMJ pain also grind their teeth at night, so one of our most highly recommended treatment options is a dental night guard. Using intraoral scans or a mold, we will craft a comfortable, custom-fitted mouth guard to wear while you sleep. They should be close-fitting, so they don’t fall out when you open your mouth. The soft plastic material will keep your teeth separated, relieving pressure and strain on the TMJ and protecting your teeth from enamel loss.
As a last resort, surgery could improve functionality and relieve pain in the jaw. If your TMJ is badly injured, or you’re suffering from a related problem that worsens your condition (such as arthritis), surgery would relieve symptoms fast. We will recommend against surgery unless other treatment methods prove ineffective.
Our Sachse dentists want to get to the root of your TMJ pain. Whether you suffer from bruxism or are stressed and need recommendations to reduce your symptoms, we are ready to help. We are dedicated to providing whole-patient care, and that will always include a comprehensive analysis of factors that may be contributing to or worsening your condition. We use our big-picture understanding to narrow down your treatment options and produce better, faster results. Schedule your appointment by booking online or calling 469-777-4954.

Dr. Dang is so incredible! I had so much fear and anxiety going to the dentist but I almost didn’t feel the dreaded ‘shot’ at all and the whole treatment was at ease and very comfortable. I’m so grateful for what he has done!
